Crowns Q & A

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a cap, or cover, for a weak or unattractive tooth. At Belmont Dental Associates, Dr. Lembo and the team provide natural-looking porcelain crowns Crowns are custom-crafted and tinted in the office to fit over your tooth precisely and seamlessly blend in with your other teeth.

Why would I need a dental crown?

Crowns repair damaged teeth and provide support to broken or weakened teeth. These caps are also ideal for cosmetic purposes to cover misshapen or severely stained or discolored teeth.

Your dentist at Belmont Dental Associates may recommend a dental crown to:

  • Replace a large filling with not much natural tooth left
  • Cover and protect teeth after root canals
  • Restore broken or fractured teeth
  • Cover misshapen or discolored teeth
  • Top dental implants
  • Anchor dental bridges

Dental crowns are versatile and customizable dental treatments. If you have questions about crowns, schedule an appointment with the team at Belmont Dental Associates for all the answers.

How long does it take to fit a dental crown?

Compared with a tradition dentist that installs a dental crown in two appointments, Belmont Dental Associates provides crowns much faster by using in-house CAD-CAM technology and dental lab equipment that enables them to install dental crowns in a single visit.

During your crown appointment, your dentist removes a thin layer of enamel from your tooth. This process allows the crown to fit over your tooth properly by resting flush with your other teeth. If necessary, your dentist shapes your tooth and removes decayed material.

Next, your dentist takes images and impressions of your tooth to custom-make your crown, and when it’s ready, places the cap over your tooth, checks the fit and your bite, and permanently bonds the crown to your tooth.

How should I take care of a dental crown?

With proper care, crowns should last for up to 15 years.

You take care of your crown just like your natural teeth: brush for at least two minutes twice per day and floss at least once per day. You should also schedule dental appointments every six months at Belmont Dental Associates, so your dentist can monitor your dental health, and you can have a professional cleaning.
